Hydroseeding services to renewable energy companies, civil engineering contractors, opencast mining operators and golf course developers.

Hydroseeding

Hydroseeding using state of the art purpose built machinery ensures that the ingredients – grass seed, fertilisers, soil binders and mulch are thoroughly mixed in tank and kept suspended in a homogenous slurry prior to application. The slurry is pumped to a high pressure discharge nozzle for uniform application onto sub soils, top soils and root zone to provide an even coverage on the roughest of terrain.

All types of vegetation can be grown using this system from fine fescue golf course mixtures to department of transport approved roadside grasses and native wild flower meadows and mowing strips. Hydroseeding has become a widely used method of seed application where large areas can be covered in a relatively short space of time and allows grasses to be grown where conventional landscape methods are impossible to utilise.

Weed Control and Invasive Species Management

Aitchison Hydroseeding Ltd key staff and team members are City & Guilds National Proficiency Test Council trained, qualified and certificated for herbicide application and invasive species management.

Controlling unwanted vegetation with a safe and environmentally acceptable approach through stem injection.

Hand held applicators for smaller areas and spot treatments can be utilised along with self propelled boom sprayers for larger areas.

Tree Surgery

Our employees are National Proficiency Test Council City and Guilds qualified tree surgeons. We have experience in dismantling all species of trees. Tree surgery /felling is carried out using advanced arboricultural rigging techniques to dead / dangerous trees, storm damaged and trees for site clearance.

We operate an environmental 'no burn' policy for all brushwood. All brushwood from our tree operations is chipped on site and can be extracted if required. Our tree surgeons are capable of tackling all trees regardless of age or condition and we specialise in site clearance for commercial land devlopers or civil engineering works.

Tree Planting

We offer tree planting services to suit differing client needs. We use the highest quality British grown trees from saplings to mature trees to ensure optimal survival and establishment rate.

Over our years of operation we have planted hundreds of thousands trees in woodland, aquatic and parkland settings working alongside client specifications with the best methods employed.

Viking Energy Windfarm – Shetland

Hydroseeding works to 468,000m2 of cable tracks, borrow pits and tracksides of the new Viking Energy Project using native grasses on the main island of Shetland.

Initially we used our purpose built quadbike seeders to seed 65,000m2 on an out of use, drained reservoir. A further visit to hydroseed 14,000m2 was completed using our Unimog and mounted hydroseeder.

Sculpted from the sand dunes of Balmedie Aberdeendshire, some 600,000 sqm of hydroseeding was applied to the golf course landscape, over a 3 month period, to stabilise and grow what is now one of the world’s leading golf courses.

Shetland Gas Plant - 2011

A steep sided peat hill side had to be excavated to accommodate the new plant with 650,000 ³ of peat placed in storage tanks for future use when the plant is decommissioned. We established vegetation on those stored peat surfaces as well as the verges and embankments of the 2.4 km access road.

Airdrie To Bathgate Rail Link - 2011

A New 15 mile rail link between North Lanarkshire and West Lothian. Our Elite team of NPTC City and Guilds Certified tree surgeons carried out specialised felling works to make way for the newly re-opened rail road.

Britains largest Hydro Electric project was treated with a hydroseed mix of fine fescue grasses to an area of 1.5 million sqm of scarred landscape. Our all terrain hydroseeders gained easy access to even the most challenging areas.

Farr Windfarm Inverness - 2006

Farr Windfarm has 40 Turbines which cover an area of 26 miles of access track. We applied fescue native grasses to reduce the environmental impact on local wildlife particularly the golden plover and hen harrier to an area of 500,000 sqm.

    Our Humble Beginnings

    The Aitchison family have been Hydroseeding in the UK since 1968. Alex T Aitchison was founder of this exciting new process of seeding which was first introduced to the United Kingdom in the 1960’s. He was indeed a pioneer of Hydroseeding at that time. The knowledge and expertise gained in those early years has been fundamental to the success of the business today.

    Gary Aitchison

    In 1979, Gary Aitchison joined his father and learned the skills and knowledge of Hydroseeding. It seemed the right thing to do as Gary had always helped out over the school summer holidays, he had a willingness to learn and worked hard, starting from the ground up.

  • 1989

    The Winter

    The re-development of Scotland’s second largest heap of colliery waste bing (Addiewell South), transformed into landscaped contours to soften the visual impact on the neighbouring mining village of West Calder. Aitchison Landscape contractors planted 150,000 native hardwood and softwood trees on the embankments and surrounds of this newly contoured bing and hydroseeding to the flat inner areas. This work was carried out for RJ Levack for West Lothian Council. This area is now the surrounds of HMP, Addiewell.

    New Ventures

    Gary took over the business in 1996, and secured new contracts with RJMcLeod, for Transport Scotland, on the A830 Fort William to Mallaig Road. The planting of 18,000 cell grown native hardwood trees and hydroseeding to embankments and verges provide what is now an ideal habitat for the flora and fauna of the surrounding environment.

    Aitchison Hydroseeding is involved in a number of high profile contracts throughout Scotland, continuing to meet high environmental and ecological standards, helping to provide the ideal habitat for Scotlands flora and fauna.

    New Additions

    New addition to the plant fleet - Honda quad seed and fertiliser broadcast spinner - for revegetating the huge soft ground areas on Windfarm and Hydroscheme borrow pits.

    Replacement Hydroseeding Machinery

    Our MAN HX 4x4 18 Tonne All terrain truck, the current transport vehicle of choice for the British Army, coupled with our Finn T120 Hydroseeding unit is capable of delivering Hydroseeding slurry for application to the roughest of terrains and can cover vast areas.

    Health and Safety Qualifications

    Three (senior) team members have successfully completed the Nebosh General Certificate in health and safety at the start of this year. This great success shows our dedication to health and safety within our workplace and can be implemented on site.
